VODAPHONE and First Direct have stopped advertising on Facebook because their brand names appeared next to the British National Party's welcome page.  The mobile giant's and bank's careful crafted slogans flashed up on the same page as the right-wing group, whcih exists 'to secure a future for the indigenous peoples of these islands in the North Atlantic'.

Vodaphone said it pulled the adverts because they violated policy on supporting political parties, but still planned to work with the social networking site.

Online bank First Direct said it had to ensure its advert locations were 'consistent with its own values and identity'.  New Media Age magazine, which alerted the companies, said: "On the Internet you often have little control of where your adverts are shown".

For those around the world that are unfamilar with the BNP.  The BNP was been in the press a lot over the last eighteen months with regards to holding meetings encouraging racism.  Must be said that all charges against the leader of the party have been dropped.
